Namibia
Our Adult Forum series on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) kicked off on January 7 and continues through February 18. The forum series takes place Sunday mornings at 9:15 and is discussion oriented. We're learning about the MDGs and the role that we, as Christians, can and should play in relieving global suffering.
While keeping a global perspective, we've also chosen
Namibia as our focus country and will be gathering information about the
specific situation in that sub-Saharan country. One reason for choosing
Namibia is that St. James' already supports a mission there, Kristina Nevius'
Mark 9:37 orphanage. In 2006, we contributed $1,500 to it through our Missions
and Outreach budget. It makes sense to learn more about the nation in which
this outreach operates.
A quick web search yields the following information about Namibia:
Population: 1,788,000
GDP: $1,984 USD per capita
People with HIV/AIDS: 160,000 (8.95% of the population)
Orphans: 47,000
