''When Jesus calls us to feed the poor and water the thirsty and provide clothing to the naked, visit the prisoner, visit the sick, heal the sick – the Millennium Development Goals are about all of those... They are a specific way of addressing the Gospel challenge to care for our neighbors. They're achievable in our own day if we have the will to do it and, increasingly, this church is vested in that.''
-Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori March 13, 2007
"What Can One Do?" So, now that you know all about the Millennium Development Goals, you've probably got 0.7% just burning a hole in your pocket, wanting to get out and heal the world. Here are some worthwhile organizations for you to ponder as we gear up for "Half-time," the midway point between the signing of the Millennium Declaration in 2000, and the 2015 target date for achieving the goals. Our study guide, "Eradicating Global Poverty," was prepared by the National Council of Churches of Christ and is available now for $8.50 per copy. As we learn about global reconciliation, we've also chosen Namibia as our host country.

Washington National Cathedral Invites You to BREAKTHROUGH:
The Women, Faith, and Development Summit
to End Global Poverty Join us in person or online for this unprecedented and historic gathering of international leaders in the women, faith, and development communities to launch a campaign to increase financial and other support for women and girls by governments, multilateral institutions, nongovernmental institutions, corporations, and individuals. The day includes special Sunday Forum guest Thoraya Ahmed Obaid, executive director, UN Population Fund; a Celebratory Worship Service with Holy Eucharist and Choir with guest preacher Dr. Agnes Aboum; a joyful opening procession; and announcements of substantial new commitments of increasing resources for women and girls. The Hon. Madeleine Albright, former U.S. secretary of state and Summit co-chair, offers the keynote address, stating the case for how governments, faith communities, and the nongovernmental sector can and must work together to empower women and end poverty. Global YouthAIDS Ambassador Ashley Judd anchors a segment focusing on the special needs of adolescent girls. The entire summit will be webcast live at www.nationalcathedral.org. Breakthrough is free and open to the public, although registration is required to attend in person. |
