Weekly Celebrations, Actions and Meditations
To Promote Earth Stewardship
Week 7: May
4-10: “Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast
array….so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.” (Genesis 2:1-2,
NIV).
Focus on
sustainability. Consider the immense value of all God has given us to use,
to enjoy and to manage. Strive to reduce your carbon footprint and to help
reduce global warming. Make a commitment to move toward a lifestyle that allows
sustainable and fair use of the planet’s resources.

Celebration
- Use your
Sabbath to think of the natural world and how much God has provided for us.
- Read a book
on evolution. In fact, read opposing viewpoints on the subject.
- Read about
continental drift, first put forward by
Abraham Ortelius
in 1596. Only with the development of the theory of
plate tectonics
in the 1960s was a sufficient
geological
explanation of the cause of their movement found.
- Read about
the mammals on Gondwanaland, a
supercontinent
which included South America, Africa, Madagascar, Antarctica, India, other
parts of South Asia, and Australia. At one time it even included Florida and
most of Southern Europe.
- Spend time
outdoors with your eyes closed and your nostrils and ears wide open.
- Look inside
a flower at the perfect beauty of the reproductive parts.
- Show a child
something in nature and watch their eyes open wide in wonder.

Action
- Are you
recycling, including contributing to charity shops?
- Eat Fair
Trade chocolate (available at Trader Joes).
- Plan your
menu for next week and buy only as much food as you need.
- Employ the
LOAF principle when shopping – Locally produced, Organic, Animal friendly, and
Fairly-traded goods.
- Say No to
Unwanted plastic Bags (SNUB). Carry a couple with you and refuse the ones you
don’t really need.
- Pick up

- When
dusting, avoid using polishes – just a cloth or duster. Try a water-dampened
cloth, then dry your furniture.
- Shop locally
and/or at farmers markets instead of driving to the supermarket.
- Invest in
rechargeable batteries.
- Are you
recycling everything possible? Have another check.
- Take time to
write to a public official on an issue of justice about which you feel
strongly.
Meditation
Meditate on what
you can do to help make the world a better place. Then, make a personal pledge
