Commonly Asked Stewardship Questions

1.  What is a pledge?

§  A faith commitment of financial support to the church for a particular time period.

§  Participation in the St. James’ fall annual fund drive.

§  Subject to change if circumstances change. 

2.  Is the church dependent on pledges?

§  YES … for most of our operating income to cover fixed expenses for staff, worship, property maintenance and debt service.

§  YES … to support our Christian education programs, missions and outreach.

§  Minority of income is from fundraising and space fees for community programs. 

3.  Why should I sign a financial commitment?

§  As a serious response to Biblical teaching to give back to God in thanksgiving for one’s many blessings.

§  To maintain our house of worship where we love and serve God, helping us do His work in the world.

§  The church needs regular financial support of its members to plan for and pay its financial obligations.

 4.  How can I pay on my pledge?

§  Weekly, monthly, annually or any way that is best for your particular situation.  Tell us on the pledge form to help our Treasurer plan.

§  By cash or check in your church envelopes.

§  Electronically through your bank the same way you pay some of your bills.  This steady income helps keep the church on solid financial ground

§  With appreciated securities (often a tax advantage).  For guidance, call the office or email  treasurer@stjamespotomac.org .

§  Prepay by paying some or all of your 2009 pledge in 2008 (usually for increased tax advantage); these funds will be used only in 2009.

5.  What if I can’t make the pledge I signed?

§  Situations can change drastically and quickly.  Pledges are not legally binding and can be changed.

§  Please notify the Treasurer and adjust as needed. 

6.  What if my finances change for the better?

§  Give thanks for this unexpected blessing.
