SERVING GOD IN ABUNDANCE

“For to those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance.”
-- Matthew 13:12a

Jesus’ words above conclude the parable of the talents. To the original audiences, a “talent” meant money—the value of a particular weight of gold or silver. It is significant that the master in the parable praised those who chose to invest their talents rather than to bury them. It is also telling that the meaning of “talent” has broadened over time to encompass our abilities as well.

What talents do you have? And how do you invest them?

One important way can be in service. Indeed, service is both a responsibility and a joy. By providing an avenue for expression and a chance to invest one’s gifts into practice, service can be empowering and liberating. St. James’ simply could not function without the dedicated service of so many talented volunteers.

Another important way—hearkening back to the original meaning of “talent”—is in our financial giving. Our collective giving is critical to ensure the strong worship we have come to expect, the Christian education and other formation activities that nurture us in our faith, and the expansion of our efforts in missions and outreach.

The many ways we can give of our talents are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they share a common thread. Each honors the desire we all have to build a community of believers that is, in our own humble way, the salt of the earth, the light of the world.

We have prepared a list of Frequently Asked Questions and a pledge worksheet, as well as a pledge form for 2012. As you review these materials, prayerfully reflect on the talents God has entrusted to you and how you can share them. And please do consider the great impact your deliberate, increased giving can make. Last year, we reached more than 90% of an audacious goal of $450,000. This year, we can do even better. No matter what we have, we each can each make a real contribution to St. James’, while giving in proportion to our means.

With so much talent, our congregation has much to offer in service to God.
