Sunday School Registration Form

We offer a Sunday school program that coincides with the 10:30 Holy Eucharist service. Our curriculum is Living The Good News, which is based on the weekly Gospel lesson. The students can start coming to class at 10:15 with the class starting promptly at 10:30. The students have different times that they are dismissed and join the service and their families. Each student is encouraged to bring an offering of non perishable foods for the food ministry and the students who are five years or older have the option to receive offering envelopes to bring their monetary donations in . The Sunday school has special programs through out the church year to celebrate or honor the season of the church. The following classes are offered.

Sunday Mornings

NURSERY: This program is for our smallest parishioners, infant - two years old. The nursery opens at 10:15 and the children stay until the beginning of communion. Parents may drop off children before the worship service and pick up the children to join their families for communion.

Two's /three's class: This class is designed for children who are 2 ½ by September 1st and all three year olds. The class starts at 10:30 but the class begins welcoming the children at 10:15. These children have a play time, story, lesson , craft project and snack. They are dismissed right before communion time and are brought upstairs to join their families. This class has one teacher and a parent helper each Sunday.

Children's Church for children from three years old through kindergarten begins at 10:30 a.m. The children are welcomed by Parke Brown, who has been teaching this age children about Jesus, the Bible, and the church for over thirty-five years! After Children's Church the children go to Sunday School, where they have a snack and have age-appropriate activities centered on scripture. They return upstairs to their families in time for communion.

4 and 5 year olds: This class has a combination of four year olds and kindergartners. There is one teacher, parent helper, and a student volunteer. This group starts in children chapel with a teacher and a parent volunteer. The service starts at 10:30 and ends around 11:00. The students then go to their classroom for snack, story, games and craft projects. The stories are linked to the gospel lesson of the day. These students are dismissed prior to communion and are brought upstairs to join their families.

The elementary classes are split according to the number of students in each grade. Typically we will have a first grade class, second and third combined and fourth and fifth combined. This group studies the gospel lesson, has crafts and games. The students in this group are dismissed at the offering and will join their parents in the service for the preparation of communion prayers.

Middle school group, sixth, seventh and eighth grades are one group that meet from 10:15 until  11:15. They also go up at the offering time in the service. This group has mostly discussions about he gospel lessons, some extended activities to further understand the lesson and games such as bible jeopardy to review various bible trivia. This group is also performing and writing the Kingdom Kids program for the elementary group.
The eighth graders are also welcomed to participate in a pre-confirmation class which takes place in mid February.

Special Programs We have two special programs that run during the school year:

Pre-confirmation class is offered to the eighth grade and high school students who wish to be confirmed. All students need to be baptized by the confirmation date. This class runs about 8 weeks and starts in mid February. The teacher prepared the students by reviewing the journey from baptism to now, reviewing the Episcopal liturgy and the baptismal covenant. The students attend the confirmation service at the Washington Cathedral along with several other candidates from the Washington dioceses. This group usually has a dinner the night prior to confirmation and are recognized in the 10:30 service the Sunday following the confirmation. Any one interested in this class should contact the church office 301-762-8040, for further information.

Kingdom Kids is a puppet ministry started many years ago at St. James' . The middle school group has taken this play over and they write, produce and put on the show for the elementary, and preschool group. This program is usually once a month and includes a puppet show with Chip the chipmunk who is always confused by the lessons he is learning in Sunday school. After the play the students are invited to complete several crafts that coincide with the lesson and have a snack which includes a fellowship with the middle school students and then a trip to the kingdom kids shop with gold coins that have been achieved by answering review questions about the lesson of the day. The store has Christian novelties that they can select or they can save their coins and use them next time. This program starts at 10:30 and usually all students join the service at communion. Check the web site calendar for select kingdom kid Sundays.
