The early settlement was first known as Hohman (named after an early settler), and then as State Line (named after its proximity to the Illinois border). In 1869 the Detroit butcher George H. Hammond built a slaughterhouse, which sparked the growth of other industry, and then the city was renamed in his honor. In 1901, fire destroyed the Hammond Company and eliminated 1,500 jobs. The city mounted an effort to attract new industry, and in 1906 the Standard Steel Car Company opened in Hammond, employing 3,500 men. Hammond developed an impressive regional downtown with department stores, office blocks, and movie palaces, and in the 1920s experienced a housing boom. Most new homes were modest bungalows south of the downtown area.

Construction halted in the 1930s during the Depression, and accelerated again during the 1950s. In 1966, the opening of a shopping mall in Calumet City challenged Hammond's 70-year history as a center for retailing. During the next decade, long-established family businesses closed and a wave of demolition gutted the once-prosperous downtown. Several major industries closed, including American Steel Foundries in 1973, Pullman-Standard in 1981, and Rand McNally in 1981.

From 1970 to 1990 Hammond's population declined 22 percent, from 107,983 to 84,236. In 1980, 47 percent of the workforce remained in manufacturing occupations, 40 percent in technical sales and service, and 13 percent in managerial and professional occupations. By 2000, the population of 83,048 remained 72 percent white, primarily of German, Polish, and Irish ancestry, while Hispanics and African Americans accounted for 21 percent and 15 percent of the population, respectively.

Our week together as a youth group:

We left from St. James' early Saturday morning, June 18.

More pics of this part of the trip.

We stayed that night at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 4780 East 126th Street Carmel, IN 46033-2408. The local agency identifies the need, publicizes the upcoming workcamp in the community, solicits and screens applications for work to be done, and raises funds to pay for materials. The local agency for this particular workcamp was an arm of the City of Hammond government, and the City was a major supporter. Their local name for this workcamp was "Hammond Hammers for Hearts", and they created a ten-minute video focussing on the help that was provided to the residents in need.
